Hi,
I have had builders in doing various jobs for me, they start at 8.30, finish at 4.30 take a couple of 15 min breaks and around half hour for lunch.
Now the bill has come in and they are charging for 8 hours a day and I would have expected the breaks to not be billable. Is it usual practice to include breaks or are they trying it on?

Coo - 'odd job' builders are they? Usually builders charge by the day or half day, people who charge by the hour expect to be moving on after a hour or so...

Don't forget that most small company or self-employed builders do job related work off site so my expectation would be that the extra half hour would be cover the off site work.
As for being on site expect tea breaks to be included in the charged for time but lunch breaks aren't. But yes I agree with HE244 - get the job priced on 'peice work' rather than day (hourly) rate.

If you have agreed a day rate then it's a cost per day which includes breaks. You should have agreed the days working hours though.

If you have agreed an hourly rate, then you wont pay for breaks.

There were several different jobs that were changed, added to and amended along the way, part down to us changing our minds and also discovering issues. This lead to us going to an by the hour arrangement but I expected to pay for the hours they were working, and not their breaks as well.
I dont think Ive managed the whole thing very well but we are were we are, thanks for your comments

Are they charging ( for example) 8 hours at £120 or 8 hours at £15/hour.

I take it by that post you do not get paid for any breaks/tea/lunch/comfort/ where you are employed.

As Ian has pointed out, Is the final price acceptable?

It doesn't really matter how it's worked out.

TEa breaks yes - but you should not be paying for their 1/2 hour lunch break, they are not generally paid for anywhere.
