just had new stairs fitted with hemlock spindle and rails with the steps in parana pine, continuing on landing with english (wickes) pine skirting.
Can anyone recommend to me, do I stain to blend the types of wood, or
wax, oil, or varnish.

I'd enjoy the differences and not stain it. Tung oil, about 20 coats, will give an easy to maintain finish. Having said that, I did ours in shellac varnish (french polish) 25 years ago, and it's still ok.
