I wonder how much these chips add to the cost of the passport?

Since they are starting to be added to the most basic of retail items, a minimal amount...!

Of course the near double hike in the cost of the passport over the last couple of years has nothing to do with that - it's in preparation for the NIR which is the core of the identity card scheme...

aha, typical UK government way of doing business.
Overcharge you in one area to subsidise another scheme or policy. It always seem that they overcharge for things we actually want or need (housing, HIPS, passports, fuel, travel) to pay for the things we don't want or need (ID cards, speed cameras, MP's pay rises, war etc)

But of course...if they were upfront and told the truth, people might question things before it's too late!
