pergola height

Just a quick question some one may know, whats the normal height (if there is one) off the ground to the bearer beam of a pergola. I am building a skillion style roof at the ledger against the back of the house its 3.2m high, but not sure how high the other end should be I cant really gauge whether 2.4 is goign to be so high or whether 2 m is too low. Anwy ideas

I had to solve this one myself last year. My answer depended on proportion and context - things like the height of the nearby arch and hedge (OK so the height of the hedge is variable) - and quite importantly on the height of me. It ended up just high enough for a nearly six-footer to comfortably reach and hang onto the beam.

needs to clear a tall person, but it really it down to the size and proportion of the garden and the effect you are after

.... so I went outside to measure. My horizontals are at 2 metres. I really thought they were higher, but like thermo says - clear a tall person comfortably and you'll be right.

Mine is 2.1 metre high and my youngest 15 yrs old is 6' 4" hasn't has any problem yet
