Photocard Driving Licence

Check to see that your licence has not expired, the photocard has to be replaced (at your expence) every ten years.

£1,000.00 fine if caught, and the possibility that your insurance will be invalidated.

I didn't know that! Looked at mine and it expires in Dec 13, phew. On the back there are some categories without details. What are fklnp? I assume C1 covers up to 7.5ton lorry as I once drove a rental one to move home.

C1 covers up to 7500kg gross, yes.

As for the others, in order:
Tractors
Riding mowers
Electric vehicles (no longer applicable)
Vehicles used for short distances (no longer applicable)
Mopeds

A fab country and very biker friendly
Very child friendly also.

I think it might arise from the fact that they don't suffer from the same kind of paranoia that we Brits suffer from. Perhaps because the reason for paranoia just isn't there.

I coudn't agree more. I've met nothing but sincere bonhomie towards me wherever I've been - and that includes 95% of the country!
The kids seem better behaved too, but maybe thats just what I've encountered.
John :)

Even more of the culture shock is the amount of roadside litter over here, especially near roundabouts.
Awful!
I remember the cool down showers in the southern rest areas - misting cold water :P Just the think for a sweaty biker!
A fab country and very biker friendly - only too happy to flash impending gendarmes. We should take that on board!
John :)

i got worried when i couldent find the toilet pan, at the rest areas, just a hole
lol
i biked across france the roads are like new,and not much traffic, but try to avoid the road tolls,it gets expensive.. you relise how huge the country is wene u bike it .

Its also handy to take a photocopy of passports and driving licences.
Thankfully I had done this when we had our luggage stolen last year, it really helps a lot with sorting things out.

Agreed, the friendly p i s s oir is a guaranteed cure for diarrhoea but thankfully they seem to be less frequent than before......I'm never sure if you're meant to put your hands or your feet on the plates :P

"The DVLA writes to every driver when their photo card driving licence is due for renewal, providing instructions on how to renew and the penalty for not doing so."

From:
http://www.moneysavingexpert.com/travel/renew-driving-licence#europe

A UK driving licence is accepted throughout the EU,
It's also worth noting the DVLA advises any driver travelling abroad to carry a photocard licence, rather than the older all-paper version. Whilst this isn't obligatory, it may make your journey easier where required

Have to agree with Dave here - my photocard driving licence expired about 18months ago and I'm 99% certain I got a letter a couple of months before from the DVLA telling me it was time to renew and included the form I needed to fill in etc...

They sent me Jack Sh@te.
Had to rent a car and found out then, luckily you can still drive if entitled.

As you can see from this thread alone, three out of six people did not get a reminder...

just come back from the Vendee, had a great time never used a Peage motorway except on the first day when we were running a bit late 9euro70 for that which was ok but had we used them all the way there and back the bill would have been 180euro  food and drink is reasonable in the bars/restaurants average 50euro a night for 2 of us. fuel was 1euro46 to 1euro61 for unleaded a litre.
using the D roads is much more pleasant anyway and you can stop whenever / whereever you like, average town to town speed 50 -60mph in town varies from 20 - 40 take your time and enjoy yourself
thanks for the reminder of licence expiry mine runs out in november!

Some minor roads joining a major road from the right have priority, usually out in the sticks. So watch out for cars ambling onto the carriageway in front of you!
Happens in the little towns too! In Vic-sur-Ainse when you are driving up the High Street, you suddenly find that you have to stop to give right of way to cars emerging from a little street on the right. Added to this some drivers still think that they have the right of way when entering a roundabout. The Parisian Peripherique can also be a bit hairy first time:

Little niggles apart, France is a wonderful country.

Before you jump down my throat, have you checked whether the three had changed address in the last ten years and not told DVLA?

The DVLA web site says that they will inform drivers about three months before but only to their last known address.
