Nice sharp holesaw on a powerful drill - given the cheese straw-like quality of modern 4-growth-rings-to-the-inch timber you could zip through the joists without noticing....
 
Would a normal starratt cutter allow you to drill that thickness, in one hit, usually you have to clear the bit out and then go in a second time for deep cuts.
