... The DNO view the CU and it's breakers/fuses as the over current protection for installation so the tails should never be over loaded...

:? I can't see that... I have a 60A main fuse, and an average load of less than 1kW, but I have 5x32A MCBs, 1x16A, 3x6A, 1x20A that I can think of easily.

Thanks John. Apart from the usual summer holiday nonsense I've not been too far from home but I don't have a clue where the last 6 months have gone. :(

In answer to your question, my original post said "in electrical design terms" the fuses are over current protection because as you rightly say, if Mrs D decided to do the washing, drying, cooking and cleaning while you were welding up your next project the DNO fuses would probably open before your tails melted.

Using the up stream CU breakers as down stream over current protection for the cable is not the normal way of doing things but as the DNO fuses are technically not part of the consumers installation under normal conditions that's what the breakers are doing.
