Well folks, it's that time again!

Hmm something not quite right with this wall light wiring.

No earth at wall light, as earth wire has been used as the neutral wire, so the question is what happened to the neutral wire :?:

In the jb the earth of one of the cables is being used as the live wire, & for some reson one of the wires in all three of the cables in the JB has been cut off.

RF Where do the three cables in the jb go to :?:

Edit:

Are the cables T+E or old Flat 2 core, with the inner insulation removed from 1 of the conductors :?:

Looks like single plus earth. Is that still available (OK silly question)

I suspect the three cables to the JB are feed, switch and lamp..

Is the black & cpc cable in the JB going to the switch?

There must be another JB between the one pictured and the T&E to the wall light.

If there is not, maybe it is wired like this:

The top cable in the JB piccy is the L & N feed, with L on the cpc.

The bottom l/h cable goes to the switch, and the bottom r/h cable feeds the light fitting with sw live & neutral.

Only problem with that is the cpc is chopped off at the fitting: was the wall light "working"??

When would single plus earth have been used :?: I know extra switch returns may have been one use for single plus earth, but else would single plus earth have been used for :?:

That is what I thought the three cables maybe for.

It was still in use the 1970-1980's - many houses near to me on an estate are riddled with them.

does the earth on the black and earth in the jb,go to the live of the live and earth?

very common in council or ex-council houses..

here's one in my hall used as strappers to make it into 2 way switching..

a whole week never goes by without me or the lads finding central heating wiring used in this way

The photo of the wall fitting indicates that the only red wire in the JB is the switched live, which means that the cable coming into the JB at 7 o'clock is the one to the wall fitting..

Therefore, the cable coming into the JB at 11 o'clock is the cable to the switch, with the bare wire as the switched live and the black wire permanently live.

Therefore, the cable coming into the JB at 5 o'clock is the live feed, with the black wire permanently live and the bare wire neutral.

I guess that there was no T&E and shortage of red single and earth cables in the lecky's van so he chose the only red cable for the wall fitting, where the householder was most likely to expose the wires and see a red switched live cable.

Folk are saying this cable is 1C&E. Surely the one with the red conductor id T&E at least?

Sorry for the delay in replying, been busy.

It is all wired in single and earth cable.

IIRC the earth wire in the top cable was a switched live

You can still buy singles and earth in harmonised colours
