my BiL was telling me the other day I should get a thermocouple to check my heating pipes. he says he used to sell it, would cut it from a 500m reel and sell it by the metre, you can make a thermocouple by twisting the ends of the special 2-core wire together and smashing it with a hammer. proper ones have welded ends. So cheap a lot of people put one on a pipe and leave it there rather than recovering it, so they can use it next time on the same pipe.

They are about £2 on fleabay with the correct plug on.

apparently "K" type is the one to get and most multimeters have a socket and are normalised to suit the output curve (mine has).
 
A thermocouple is basically just 2 different metals which come together at a junction.
The voltage generated for a given heat by each metal is different hence the difference in voltages can be measured and the overall temp can be calculated.
