I have a 9" brick wall, just under 6' high, with piers at 4 metre intervals. I want to put a gate in it, 33" plus frame, say one metre brickwork removed.

If I put it half way between piers, there would be two 1.5 metre unsupported runs. But I would prefer to position it next to one of the piers, so the run would be 3 metres.

Is that too far? I doubt there is enough footing to build a pier where it was not originally planned.

You have to have some form of pier supporting the cut wall. The first job is to dig down and pour in concrete to construct the foundation for the pier before you cut the wall. I think two unsupported 1.5m wall runs with the windage of the door AND the possibility of the door blowing shut is too dodgy unless you lintel over it.
