Pillar in extension

So I visited a friends newly built extension, it's a bog standard house and I was really surprised to see a pillar running right in the middle of the extension.

I found this a bit odd and rarely see it in modern extensions, is there any reasonable explanation for why there would be a pillar?

Steel beam and/or foul waste

Is the pillar in line with the wall of the original house
