I was half listening to one of those home renovation programs over the weekend and I thought I heard them say that planning permission (as opposed to building regs) was required where a steel beam over 3 metres in length was required, though I didn't hear what it was to support.

I've done a search but can't find anything about any 3 metre limit, is there such a rule/reg?

Planning permission only interested in how it will look, how big etc.
You can go out 6m under permitted development, (or 8m until next May?)
Nobody is going to stop you using steel if you want to.

The ever-helpful Woody is saying that your steel would need planning permission if it were stuck vertically out of the chimney (because it would raise the roof height), but otherwise not. It's called being facetious :)

doh! but I wouldn't have expected a pro to be like that to an obvious novice, silly me:( Reading it again it's obviously a ptake, double doh!

Think yourself lucky you're not being invoiced for that gem of planning advice.
