Is it okay to use standard plasterboard as a ceiling in a bathroom? It will be skimmed and then painted (probably with some sort of bathroom emulsion.)

Thanks.

if it is a ceiling with a roof above i would recommend using duplex (foil backed) plasterboards. otherwise use regular boards.

Thanks for the reply. It is actually a suspended ceiling about 200mm down from the original bathroom ceiling which then forms the floor of the loft.

Does that make a difference?

with a 200mm buffer zone of air effectively acting as an insulation barrier, then i guess the effect of foil backed will be lessened.

Hi noseall,

What effect am I trying to achieve? Is it for thermal insulation or for moisture reduction? The new boards will be below the original ceiling as mentioned, and then above that there is 200mm of insulation and then the loft floor.

duplex boards help with condensation, where the cooler loft air meets the warmer room air.

the lesser the difference in temperature the lesser the effect of condensation.
