A friend asked me to look at a cover that had been damaged and i dont know what it is never mind where to find one/ who to ask to replace it.
Her house is an old converted school which may add to the explanation?
It is basically an inspection hatch of some sort maybe to help with installation of a flue on the gas fire? It is on the exterior of the chiney and like a small 8"x8" manhole cover. When opened you can see the flue of the gas fire running up the chimney, and the hatch has slot which is turned to open/close it.
From what i can guess it is maybe made of pewter? or similar. Its definately not lead but i think too soft for steel? And its not painted or galvenised as far as i can tell.
any ideas?
