Just wondering how long a powerflush should take, BG told me at least a day when I had a quote from them. I had a boiler installed by an independent and they booked it in as a 2.5 day job. At the start of the 3rd day it hadn't been powerflushed (though it was up and running) due to the flush machine not being available. Obviously I have no way to ensure that the flush happened, but assuming they actually stopped for only half a day was that long enough to flush correctly? The benchmark is filled in to say it was done along with inhibitor. Is there any way I can tell if the flush was done and inhibitor installed?

depends what they termed as "flushed"

a system can be flushed by filling up, draining, filling up, heat the system nice and hot, drain again, then finally fill up (adding the inhibitor)

if they have done that it should be ok.

You can test for inhibitor with a special kit, by bleeding some water from a radiator and sticking it in a jar and sticking the strip in it, there is a colour chart with it.

They used the term PowerFlush and charged 350 quid for it (35x10 radiators) and were waiting for the machine, so it shouldn't have been as simple as above.

£350.. oh..

It takes a couple of hours to flush a system, were you there when they were doing it?

I was at work so can't be 100% sure they actually did it (they seemed a bit rushed on the last morning and had been waiting 2 days for the company power flushing machine), sounds like they may have had time to do it then, was just surprised that when I bled a radiator there was still some black water.

there should definately not be any black water, if you have the time and know how, take 1 radiator off and drain it and see what the water is like, it maye get very very opaque black towards the bottom, if thats the case, they havent flushed it.

No powerflush will get a system 100% clean, usually 80-90% if you're lucky, hence why magnacleans or spirovents are fitted by conscientious installers as standard.

An easy system would still take around half a day to do properly.

Even after flushing there may still be some black deposit around the air bleed vent coming out when bleeding.

This should only run black for about 10-20 seconds though then run clear. I always go round all the rads and bleed them to eliminate worry to the customer as you have posted about.
