Hi, does anybody know how close a door on a landing into a bedroom can be to the top of the stair, when the door opens into the bedroom

I have found planning info on it being 400mm (K1) for a door opening out onto a landing so presumably you dont knock anybody down the stair but nothing relating to doors opening into bedrooms.

As you exit the top of the stair onto the landing, I want to add another door directly to the right (the wall the stair runs up) to divide a large bedroom into 2.

400mm is correct.
Digging up an extremely old thread here and I've just posted a reply on another for the same question, but may I ask where that info is from please? Doc K specifies a stair width, then the 400 in addition if the door opens onto the landing. I want it to be just 400 with the door opening into the loft, but the wording just doesn't seem to be that way?

The standard landing is effectively square as a min at stair width. It has to be bigger if a door opens over it to leave the 400 clear to the door edge in the open position.

You can't have what you want I fear.

Thank you, I do agree with what you are saying, makes sense with Doc K, it's just very annoying that it doesn't show this actual scenario. I found several instances of people not following this but they couldn't justify why, they just said that it wasn't specifically forbidden. I've seen the same in a few customers houses too. Thank you, I know I'll be building a landing as long as the width of the stairs :)

It shows it in the diagram and says so in the text in the approved document, you can only have a door at 400mm for a cupboard or duct in essence no other doors (eg to a bedroom) are permitted.
