When I did that a couple of years ago whilst replacing some floor boards it was a live gas pipe. Had to call out an emergency gas safe bod to replace it. I did turn the gas off while we waited.

Could be lead sheathed rubber insulated cable. Although it would usually have been weighed in when it was rewired, if it's no longer in use you can get some cash at the scrap yard for it.

May be a very old material "block tin"? if so scrap value is moderately high.

A Flowflex copper repair patch - 22mm would be ideal to fix that heating pipe. Quicker than cutting out pipe and using new piece with couplings.

Looks like 15mm heating pipes by the size of the nail hole and width of the joist.

Thx for the replies gyys. Upon closer inspection the lead pipe has a thin solid core piece of wire inside. Support wire?
