I am about to embark on a large garden pond project and wondered whether someone could let me know what of the following would be reasonable to expect general labourers to perform / have experience of doing:

1 - Concrete laying
2 - Rebar fitting
3 - Block walling
4 - Mini digger operation
5 - Mixing concrete
6 - Ground levels

Thanks in advance.

Only get the labourers to do what you can afford to put right if they **** it up! If they had any skills, they wouldn't be labourers. That's my view anyway.

I would not expect general labourers to do any of those jobs, apart from the concrete mixing. All the rest require a degree of competence, and you'd employ a builder that directs the GLs and tells them what to do, and he then takes responsibility if they screw up.

digging trenches, breaking up paving and wheeling it to the skip.

Youre looking for a groundworker, possibly hard landscaper.

1,2 and 5
1 and 2 under direct supervision.

I'd say everything except 4 unless they have spent time on a digger before.

The thing is, there are labourers and there are labourers. Some, I would not even allow on a broom.

Get this guy round:
