Proven once again, the Germans were right: kein schoener freud als schadenfreud.
Loosely translated: nothing is as funny as seeing a guy slipping in the snow and landing with his nuts on the little concrete divider.
I wouldn't read into the 'mates' bit too much. As I said in my original post, he's a friend of a friend, so I wouldn't regard him as my mate. He was simply recommended to me, so there's no need to get ancy about me trying to rip people off. I simply asked whether or not the price quoted to me was a good deal. I've obviously opened up some old wounds there, but that's your problem.
Anyway, thanks to those who made a useful comment. I'll check out his gas safe number when he comes round tomorrow to weigh things up.
