Shut valve on each end, counting turns on the locksheild end (the end that has to have plastic cap removed) so when re-connecting you know how many turns to open it so it remains balanced.
Thanks soggy weetabix for the quick reply but the there is only pipe fitting on one end of rad i.e. both in and out of water supply go to one control hope that i have explained this right
You will have a manual on/off head and beside this should be a screw cap. Undo this then turn screw clockwise to close l/shield part of valve, counting turns again
