Raising an RSJ by 10mm

I read a thread on here which said to use a steel spacer between the RSJ and padstone, I've tried to find the thread but can't.

With a 102mm wide beam on a 440mm padstone, would you use a spacer the width of the beam or a bit wider?

I'd probably thicken the bed under the padder or use some steel shims to pack it up. Marley Eternit fibre cement slates are excellent packers also.

Ideally you would want the shims or packers to have the same surface area as the steel bearing. If yours is 100mm square then go for it.

How far does the beam sit on the padstone. If it's 8", then you'd want 2 plates instead of just one, otherwise you're doubling the pressure (for instance)

Dunno, but it makes sense to me to put shims under the whole of the contact face of the beam.

Thanks Xtra, I think you've put it much better than I did, but I suspect from Woodys response, that I'm still wrong.

The 100x100 plate would do it or I could use a 200x100 if it would spread the weight better, Doggits suggestion does seem to make sense.

I might stick with the 100x100, if I had managed to put it in level in the first place that's what it would be.

I would try any steel stockholder close to you, they might give you access to their offcut skip for a £5
