The Oxford dictionary definition of an engineer makes no mention of universities or degrees, merely that the person is qualified in their field as a professional.

well mr 90 you say not to degree level but in what field are you not qualified to degree level please enlighten us are you just a jumped up plumber who cant pass his acs and is bitter or are you a property developer as someone stated now there are a group of ppl who apart from a select few have commited some real crimes against the building trade so are you that class of person
so your not boring but exactly are you we are all here in your opinion as jumped up plumbers but what is your employment status how do you earn a living pay your tax how do you earn the right to be on here chatting **** to tradesmen of whom a very high % on here are honest and reliable.
You only have to read some of the answers to questions on combustion chamber to see how many good ENGINEERS there are oh sorry but you cant can you your not qualified and if being a"boiler repairman" is so easy get yourself back to college and see if you can cut the mustard

For the record I'm not overly bothered what I'm called in a professional capacity, or any other for that matter.

Facts remain that some professions and professionals don't need to be sanctioned by a university to call themselves engineers. The word has sadly been hi-jacked by greedy professional bodies full of snobs.
