Re registering a car

I've never done this before.....
Friend has an 07 Mini with private reg. Ex hubby wants the plate back (the original reg is known) for retention.
Will we get a new 07 plate, or will the original one come back? It appears that the ex hubby has to fill part of the form in anyway.
It looks like the form we need is V317 but if anyone could confirm, I'd be well chuffed!

You will get the old number back, it was effectively on retention, I am waiting on exactly the same thing.

I really don't know if the old number was retained, or that he simply has the old plates....could be a bit of a difference I guess. Was I right with the V317?

V317 does sound familiar, transfer of registration numbers from one car to another.
