Hi
I ge that when i am using speed fit 15mm i need to use the STS when going up plastic to plastic.

I need to join this to a couple of radiators which have a compression olive fitting on the trv end and the shield end, should i be using the plain one (TSM) so i can use the olive on the fitting?

Or are the STS ones able to be used in both instances? ie don't use the olive

Confused

According to John Guest, the manufacturer of Speedfit, a plain insert should be used with compression fittings. You would get away with superseal inserts as long as the pipe is inserted far enough into the fitting so that the olive sits on the pipe beyond the insert. Whichever insert you use, the olive must be in place or there will be nothing holding the pipe in the fitting.

Jumping on this thread, is it ok to use TSM inserts in push fit connectors?

In fact they are the best to use with compression fittings - the superseals can be awkward to get the olives and fittings over the seals without damaging them - in fact if that's all that's available and compression is being used then take the top seal off before fitting the nut and olive.

Those O ring inserts are a real nuisance if you are putting temporary pipework in for any reason - when you remove the pipe from a (Speedfit) fitting the insert tends to stay in the fitting and is a pain to extract

Couldn't agree more - though I do have to say that the HEP can be worse - they say they are demountable but once you do manage to get them off the pipe (that's using the full key too) the S/S insert invariably stays in the fitting. At least with the JG you can undo the nut and take the insert out but with HEP you need to force the grab ring out of the fitting to get the insert out - sometimes it can be re-used sometimes it's destroyed.

Only way I've found to make that easier is a little silicone grease on the pipe before inserting.

I have a series of e-mails from them from about 12 years ago, argueing that very point. Finally, I got an admission from them that their fittings don't disassemble very well and they said they had redesigned them to fix the problem. It seems that they are still the same.
They sent me a free bag of fittings, but I wouldn't buy them again.
Edit; it wasn't fittings they sent me, just inserts. (I just remembered that)
