Hi

I need to rebuild an area of rear wall on the rear of our Victorian house due to it bowing at the top.

The wall is brick built and I need to take it down by c. 15 brick courses. As the wall will be hidden internally by a rear bedroom and hallway it doesn’t necessarily need to be rebuilt in brick.

I would prefer to rebuild in block but am not sure if this is even covered by building regs.

I’m sure there will be a lot of opinion on this but any steer and views would be great.

Cheers

First thing is have you rectified whatever caused the bowing in the first place?

Next is, yes you can use block or brick. Not covered by building regs.

Thanks Woody, yes underpinning whole house and rebuilding rear 2 storey extension.

Specialist works are been undertaken buy ASUC insured contractors but remedial works looking to do as much ourselves, family, friends, etc. Luckily my uncle was a former bridge engineer with a great deal of bricky experience.

Great project, just want to make sure we toe the line.

Thanks for input

The underpinning needs building regs approval as will the extension rebuild.

As the brickwork is part of more significant repair work then it may well require a building regulation application. You need to ask them and explain what you are doing.

You may also get caught by the need to consider insulating the wall if the area of the wall you are repairing amounts to 25% of the area of the whole rear wall.

Cheers woody, really good info. We will be submitting a building control drawing with all necessary documents. Will ensure we check the significant repair and insulation points as you have mentioned.

Thanks for the support on my first question in this forum.

What about the bond of the wall though? Like if it is English or Flemish you might have to follow that bond.

Also the bricks will be imperial of some kind. Then there is cement mortar on a wall that has lime mortar.

I have seen areas of stone buildings rebuilt in block though. Not saying it can't be done but just a few questions.

Something to bear in mind is you don't want to end up in a situation where you might have to make some tricky cuts to block, it is noisy and potentially costly.
