Hi,
Planning position of Consumer unit before I get quotes for wiring installation. The only obvious place I can put it will be be attached to a stud wall between understairs cupboard and sitting room. Is it ok to recess the unit between the studs which will allow front access from sitting room but where I can hang a picture in front of it rather than have box sticking out from the wall

Any advice much appreciated

You can get consumer units designed for flush mounting. That will be fine.

Most of the metal cased units I've seen lately have a deep box and shallow cover. As long as you fit a board inside the wall to screw it back to, and you can get cables to it safely, then I see no reason not to mount one partially recessed - you could be left with less than an inch sticking out.
