I want to reuse old gravel im digging up and im wondering if i could use it as a 'hardcore base' to lay a new gravel driveway, its a mix of 10mm gravel and 20mm slate, could i compact this down and use it as a base or would it not work?

Sure, if it has fines in it it will compact better.

Gravel on its own is too smooth, so it would need a lot of slate to bind it, otherwise it will dispace easily and the drive will sink and rut. You may need to add course sand as an additional binder.

What if i mix it with sharp sand? Or would it be easier to just buy pre made bags of mot hardcore
