We have moved into an old house and have decided to install a central heating system. What are the pros and cons of both systems and average lifespan, ie is one far likely to outlive the other on average.

How big is the old house? Living rooms and bedrooms?
How many bathrooms and showers?
How many people living in the house?

A combi boiler may not always be suitable; depends on water flow rate and pressure, as well as the maximum instant demand.

Use the EST Boiler sizing wizard to find out what size boiler you need.

Deduct 2kw (allowance for hotwater) to get the heating requirement.
Add 15% to give the total radiator requirement (This allows the boiler to run in condensing mode more of the time)

How you divide the total rad requrement between rooms is up to you - by room volume is probably the best.

Unless you need large amounts of hot water all at the same time, a combi will be more economical, both to install and to run.
High end modern combis will happily run 2 showers at the same time, as long as you don't require a waterfall. If you want 2 big, powerful showers simultaneously, or more than 2, you will need to look at a system with a large cylinder.
