I want to get a child's sink removed from the wall.

I've posted the job on a few sites and had a few responses. I'm imagining that because of the small scale of the job that the people who have responded are in the hanyman bracket.

I just want to make sure they do a decent job of it.

Is there anything that could go wrong with a job like this?

Is there anything that I need to watch out for?

Can't see much that can go wrong if a competent person is doing the work. If you are replacing the work top, make sure the new one is the same thickness.

Isolate Hot & Cold water supplies

Cut pipes back as far as possible and cap the ends

Cut back the basin waste as far as possible and cap the end

Remove the basin & taps

Replace work top

2-3 hours work

Thanks for the steps, that's going to be helfpul.

Is there anything I can check for to know the person is competent?

Get a few quotes and ask for references if you want. To be honest this stuff is so basic its probably learned in the first day of plumbing course, so you would have to hire a grade A idiot to mess this job up ;)

What do you think is a reasonable price for this job?

I've just had 275 quoted.

Do you want the unit and sink completely removed, inc plumbing or replaced?

Then the only issue I can see is, where the plumbing goes and how much if it you want removed ..I,e what you want to do with the space.
