Hi all. Grateful for any advice on the below.

We would like to remove the wall and door frame that blocked of the stairs and hallway in our mid terrace house. We have removed plasterboard, leaving a stud wall in place for now. Before progressing further, I just want to confirm:

Is the stud wall and door frame likely to be load bearing in any way? Or are there any potential knock on affects by removing this wall?

Are there any building regulation considerations that would come to bear on removing this wall and just having a banister instead?

have attached the floor plan as well in case that helps for context.

Thanks in advance for any advice.

Im not an expert but doubt the lower stair stringer would be taking the weight of anything more than the stud work. How is the top landing built into the structure?

Blup

Its probably safe to do what you propose - the studwork is merely a frame for panels.

However, below the stringer, the supporting spandrel studding that sometimes supports the outside stringer has been removed to open the storage space below the flight.

As things stand, you cannot leave the framing as is or remove it & leave things wide open - you must follow the detailed Stair Regs for handrails and spindles.

Hi All,

Thanks for everyone's comments. From what has been said, my understanding is that there are no structural/loadbearing concerns about removing the stud work but we need to replace with a banister that meets the regulations.

There would normally be a support beneath the stairs, which has been previously removed to make storage space. This has been absent since we moved in, so would assume that this is managing ok for now.

Thanks,
