Hello.

We have a single-skinned brick garage with 1100mm width UPVC window.

We are paying to have it replaced with a composite door and side panel.

The builders are removing the bricks below the window, and installing the door up to the 2x4 timber wall plate above, no bricks above the door frame.

They say we don't need a lintel, and the wall plate will be sufficient support.

Is this correct for this span? There are 2 or 3 roof beams and trusses resting on the wall plate above where the door will be.

Thanks!

You haven't mentioned a lintel above the window?
So the wall plate was previously resting on the uPVC window frame?

Will the new door frame be touching the timber or will there be timber infill between that and the wall plate?
What's the roof made of?

Thanks for replying!

The plan as described was that the UPVC frame will touch the timber wall plate, no infill.

There is not a lintel above the window. There is 1 course of bricks above the window, and a piece of wood has been screwed across the face of these bricks (for support?). The bricks and support wood will be removed.

The roof is pitched and made of concrete tile and wood rafters/joists etc.
