Just out of curiosity ….did the fire alarm bleep when you removed the smoke detector from the base ?

Nope it didn’t beep when it was removed.
It’s not wired correctly then ….it should come up fault if you remove a smoke head ..

The diode is a dead giveaway.
A proper fire alarm system with multiple detectors, one detector removed and panel beeps but still capable of operating remaining detectors.
The diode was one such way of achieving this.
