Hi. Once we have saved the cash we are hoping to replace our old (and ugly) back boiler with a modern combi. This begs the question what will i do with the big hole left in the living room wall/chimney breast. The Corgi guy recommended we put a replacement gas fire in, but as we have a victorian terrace house i wanted to fit a reclaimed fireplace and grate which can be used as a coal or wood fire. I was hoping that someone might know what alterations need to be made to the cavity to do this?
Thanks

Victorian terraced houses were designed to accommodate such appliances.
The builders opening will normally need very little work unless you are planning on a cooking range.
Not a job for an inexperienced DIY.
An older "Brickie" would be your best option as many younger ones have no experience with this type of work.

thanks for the reply, i suppose i will need to wait and see to see how much needs doing when the boiler is removed. Good idea about finding an older brickie. Another concern i had was regarding chimney liners. I believe there will be an aluminium one in there for the back boiler, is this suitable for a coal/ wood fire? Would it need removing or replacing?
