Hello

Further to a recent posting, which helped to resolve a boiler lighting problem, a further problem has arisen in the form of loud banging noises from the pipes around the boiler, followed by the boiler overheat button popping out.

A heating engineer has sourced it down to a knackered heat exchanger, the cost of which is going to be something like £500 fitted

This brings us somewhere near the territory of repair/replace; do we repair and stick with an outdated heating system, or upgrade to a new (and probably much more efficient) combi boiler system?

Guess it's all down to cost.

Could really do with an answer to the following question before making the next decision about what to do next.

Does fitting of a new heat exchanger require specialist knowledge, or could any joe bloggs go out and buy the replacement part and fit it. If so, where would be the best place to get the part from?

If the above is not feasible, then it looks like the combi route....

Thanks for looking and any advice offered.

it can be possible to descale them if your lucky pop down plumbers merchant pour it in the header tank leave as long as it says on the tin keep checking for leaks (thats very important) drain and flush system hopefully it would have worked if not eco plus 40f heat exchanger about 160 quid and not that hard to change if your confident.[/b]

Hey thanks for the advice. I will try that.

Can you recommend any specific online vendors for plumbing spares, or do you think it's best to go with a local merchant ?

The heating engineer fitted a new pump to eliminate the old pump as being the cause of the banging noises. This didn't cure the problem, so that tells me the original pump didn't not need replacing.

But he left the new one in place, and took our old pump with him and said we'd need a new pump after 8 years anyway. We will get billed for that of course, to the tune of 50 quid. I'm not exactly happy about that. Do you think we've been given fair advice?
