Boiler conked out on me other week. Boiler itself seemed ok with pilot light on etc but no hot water or heating. Anyway BG came to repair and sods law came into play because they day he came it all worked nicely when it had been off for a week. Its been working ok for few days now but i know it will go again soon. Its an old boiler that was installed about 9 years ago. (Glow worm swiftflow 75), we have no time or programmble thermostats etc. Just a simple on/off switch so if its cold we have to manually switch heating on which then make you feel like your on fire.
Obviously i want to upgrade this system so im guessing now is the chance cost permitting.

Option 1:
I have seen this http://www.mrcentralheating.com/ which offers a new boiler pack and TRV's etc which sounds like what i want.
Is this all i need to replace existing boiler? Do i need any other accessories ie. flues etc etc or will existing equipment be ok to use?

Edit: For information im looking at the BAXI 105E HE boiler kit

Roughly the cost to install? I know quotes are not really given but just looking to find my overall budget. Anything more than £300 in north west?

Option 2:
Repair existing at £130 until can comfortably afford new system and in the mean time give it a good cleaning etc. Bearing in mind its 9 years old and my breakdown again soon.

How would i get the inhibitor into the system to flush out any sludge etc?

Any advice welcome.

More like £600-£800 for labour only and no warranty on the boiler as you have supplied it yourself.

And that only if your system can be cleaned with a simple standard flush.
It also assumes that no work is needed to correctly connect the electrical side.

This is based on getting the job done reliably and safely. If you are just looking for cheap and no questions asked, I am sure you will be able to find a cowboy that will do the job for £300 to £400.

No benefits im afraid. Best can get is an interest free loan from local council upto £1000 though i suspect i will need to use their reccommended suppliers etc.

Dont want to cut corners, i want it to be all legit having the lowest cost for a half decent boiler/system.

So im best to get all the boiler and accessories and to be fitted etc etc by the same company in order to make sure everything is in the quote and to keep warranty in tact?

Most but not all, engineers will fit a boiler bought by the customer.

However in this case as we did not supply the boiler then dealing with any warrantee issues will be the responsibility of the owner.

We are totally transparent in our costings and charge £840 to fit a new boiler plus the cost of the boiler.

However, many installers charge say £500 to fit but add a markup of say £340 to the cost of the boiler. That for some reason sounds more acceptable to the customer although the cost is the same at the end of the day.

you will also need a roomstat fitted.

go wireless if your full of laminate flooring.

the prices quoted are for boiler only so will be more if you want new rads/trv`s etc

Amazing how some people will charge £300 day rate for normal work and class themselves as pro`s but if someone wants to charge dayrate for changing a boiler they must be a cowboy

To OP your old swiftflow will prob be on 15mm gas supply this will need upgrading to 22mm sometimes larger depending on distance from meter.
Also new boilers req attaching to drainage system ,these are the 2 bits that will determine the cost as changing a combi is not a long job.

The baxi 105he is a good reliable boiler and comes with a standard 15 months g`tee so dont worry too much about warranty issue just phone them up, you will need the flue as they are individual to the appliance and to save money you could change your own rad valves

im doing straight swaps for £400 labour, can change the boiler in the 1st day and flush the next, done a couple in 1 day including flush ie 5 rads :D

When you say flush, do you mean introducing chemicals into the system and later multiple fills and draindowns to remove chemicals to then add inhibitor or is flush a simple 'emptying' of the system.

What do you mark in the benchmark logbook where it asks what chemicals were used to clean system?

Or is that a proper power flush?

Shouldn't the Power flush be done the FIRST day before the boiler is installed ?

Tony

Another thing i find amazing is around 12 years ago when BG started promoting powerflushes every DIY site around called them rip off bassa`s because this was not required.
Why have people changed there mind is it because BG are market leaders or is it because its easy money for pretending to do something totally un required.
NOW let me think 400 quid to flush a system that has been pressurised from day 1 with no ingrese of air.

Or would it be cowboyish to do a straight forward cold and hot flush

Dont be shy defend your cowboy comments... whoever

Swapping out an Ariston fpr a WB next week. Won't be power flushing. I'll chuck some chem in and give it a good swill but that'll do it. Unless of course it is full of sh*te.

****ish gas having earned a reputation for robbing assholes may have more to do with advising powerflushes when not really needed, not doing them very thoroughly or charging 2 or 3 times the going rate.

.

remind me of your charge for a powerflush again?

you do of course give a lifetime guarantee on the flush if it ever needs doing again with the proviso that the customer makes reasonable efforts to inhibit the system regularly.
