Responsibility of electrical intake equipment in flats

If/when the day comes, I will wish them well in establishing communications - which would require their equipment to be better than our mobile phones at getting a reliable and usable signal within the house (I think that 'seriously thick walls' has a fair bit to do with that!)

They have access to remedies, for thick walls..

Better than the 'poster #55' that a certain rather strange member tends to use, deliberately trying to be offensive in their replies - which are so often ill-informed anyway..
I'm not sure what "poster #55" you're referring to.

I posted message #55 in this thread, and would like to think that I am neither a "strange member" nor one who tries to be offensive in my replies, which are often ill-informed" :-)

You grabbed the wrong end of the stick John - I was referring to a certain other foreign to these shores, and rather strange member, who only ever quotes the posts of others, by referring to them, rather offensively, as 'poster #??'.
#?? Identifying the particular post, and poster, rather than quoting, or the persons name.

As I implied, I assumed (hoped!) that you were not referring to me, but I couldn't (frankly still can't with certainty) work out who you were talking about :-)

Yes, I realise that there are some workarounds that they can try - but I would still "wish them luck" :)
My walls are not particularly radio unfriendly but the mobile signals are not the best here, and I did warn them of the poor coverage in advance when our excellent fixed dual fuel deal was comong to an end and they offered to extend it but only with a SM. Ironically one of the providers wanted to install a mast about 50 metres away to give our road coverage but the NIMBYs won and they still complain about poor coverage

We've just had our 3rd montly statement and it seems the gas meter isn't being read and we seem to be feeding the electric network. So far I'm very far from impressed.

That is because you limit your reading to one section of DIYnot.
Ah! I do, indeed, mainly restrict myself to this one DIY forum, although I sometimes have a need to go to other ones. However, if you happen to be talking about "GD", that's a place that I try to avoid like the plague!

The property where I do have an SM (currently electricity only) is near a town centre and always has excellent mobile signals. However, there are occasional periods, sometimes as long as two or three days, during which the supplier's system has not been able to get readings from the meter - so, like you, I'm not particularly impressed!

Hi all, just an update - Octopus came again with a different engineer, fitted the SM, and said nothing at all about the "damage" to the box. So all is well.

Interesting reading some of the comments about SM's although I didn't intend to start WW4 ! Presumably there's a roll-back option where a property already has a SM and they want it removed and replaced with a non-smart digital readout one? I don't know if they can enforce people to stay with a SM if one is already fitted? (I'm sure the energy suppliers will lie and say they don't have stock of the digital meters anymore). I know it's sometimes possible to ask them to turn off "smart" functionality.

I must say that I haven't heard of anyone trying that, but suspect it would be an uphill fight! As you say, they could come up with various reasons why they couldn't do it.

However, as you say, they presumably simply 'turn off' the 'smart' functionality. However, the householder might not necessarily trust them if they said they'd done that. However, the 'communications module' of a SM is a separate part (often physically separate), so could presumably be physically removed to give the householder more confidence - but persuading them to do that would probably be a battle!

Never heard of that happening, nor any reason to - An SM can simply turn into a dumb meter, if they are simply prevented from 'phoning home'.
