Having a rewire & Ive decided against downlighters and will go back to the traditional fitting. Do you guys think it should be in centre of room or near window where it used to be? I think it was there in the old days to prevent people seeing you getting changed (to prevent a silhouette I believe)?

My house is 1920s.

Cheers for any advice/views.

Ah, so that's why the light fittings are found close to the window. Always wondered that, thanks for the info.

As to your question, if it was me I would do what the mrs said :)

No worries mate, yep like that in all the rooms, does look bit odd but for a reason I guess. What was yr answer, in the centre? Will be usin bedside lamps too though.

Must have had some bloody thin curtains back then! This issue was of interest to me recently, as becasue I was fitting fan/luminaires i wanted them in the middle of the room. Also bedrooms are downstairs and front facing in my bungalow.

During experimentation i couldn't see any defined silhouettes at all, even on the room that currently just has newspaper stuck to the windows and the old net curtains. Of course if your 'getting changed' position is not going to be between the light fitting (even if central) and the window, it's even less of an issue.

Also, it may have been highly improper in the 20s/30s, but do you really give a stuff nowadays if somebody might see a blurry silhouette of you getting changed?

I never believed that. My opinion was that it means the light/shade pattern would be about the same after dark as in daylight.

I prefer the light fitting in the middle of the ceiling

True, not that bothered if seen and John D you may be right there. Would look better central I think.

But if you are an exhibitionist, having it near the window would mean you'd be properly lit at night....

The other reason for lights being near the window is that is was the fashion once to have a dressing table with a mirror above it placed in front of the window, the light was then above the table.

Today - in the centre of the room.

Yes I think your right, Im thinking of having a central light and two small downlighters in the bay part. Was going to have all downlighters, but think a stunning light like a crystal chandeleir would look just as nice if not nicer.
