I use my loft to store boxes etc, and everything is really dirty. I have noticed the lining, under the roof tiles, seems to be ripping in places, and I was told I could get some sort of insulating material I can pin up, to keep it in place, and keep things clean. Is this correct? and if so, what should I use please?

Don't use any insulating material at all in this location. Use a breathable membrane like this http://www.screwfix.com/p/roofers-choice-light-weight-breathable-membrane-1m-x-25m/21912 and tack it to the underside of the rafters.
