I notice round pin plugs have the L + N reversed from the "normal" 3 pin plug, anyone know why this is so?

Round pin completely different to conventional. They are used for light fittings generally.

Are you referring to the old BS546 plugs? (These are the 5 and 15A round-pin types which predate the 13A fused plug, and in fact were still in fairly widespread use well into the 1960s).

If so, then the arrangement is not reversed if they are wired correctly.

For all BS546 5A/15A and BS1363 (13A) connectors, if you look at the face of the socket with the earth connection at the top, then line is at the lower right and neutral to the left.
