Start with a corded 1/4” router, which should cover most of your projects. Trend dewalt or Makita, all the main brands do decent routers. A cordless router for trimming and a half inch router for heavier duty work can follow. Festool do a cross over router but it is incredibly expensive
Trend do 1/4 inch Palm/Trim router for around £80 corded. The beauty of these palm routers is you generally only need one hand to use it, the other holds the work piece or you can clamp for safety.
Faithfull offer a comprehensive set of cutters for not much money.
I have a Makita palm router and a 1/2 inch DeWalt.
I only use the DeWalt for worktops and picture frame profiling where I route the long pieces of wood and then use them to make the frames.
Any other project I use the palm router which costs less than £100.
