2003 , 1400cc. petrol , with one years mot and 30,000 miles on the clock . The car has a full service history and is offered at £1500.I was thinking of buying as a cheap runabout to cover about eight thousand miles a year .Any advice , as I know nothing about cars .

Looks like a bargain if its all genuine, have a look at Autotrader and judge for yourself. Then again, it is a Rover!

I thought the Rover k series engine 1.4/1.6 suffered head gasget failure?? Do a bit of research first. ;)

Yes, they do, as I can testify. But you can get warranties for around £90 a year, or less if you are a member of the RAC/AA, or put aside £500 to cover the cost when and if it happens. Later gasket designs are apparently more robust.

Yes, It's an excellent model, a little dated and small inside, but fine. I wouldn't be put off it because it's a Rover, there are spares and specialists aplenty.

The 1400cc 8v engine is the better than the 16v as far as head gaskets go, if it does go it usually means overheating so a head skim might be needed, then you've got to get a solid copper thicker head gasket and the whole job will probably cost about £200+.
Having said that my daughter has had a 1998 Rover 1.4 8v for 5 yrs and we've had no problems apart from a new rad,if you have to fit one make sure you bleed the system as per the book!
