RTS turn off

We will see how good he is, can he tell use what all those readings mean?

The meter reader, only needs to access just three of those readings, your peak, off-peak, and export I assume, and only when the readings aren't received automatically. Each smart meter, comes with a booklet, explaining how to access those readings, and their meaning.

I only have the one consumption reading to concern myself with, for each (E&G) meter, pressing 9 in case brings up those readings. I do that each Sunday, to log the readings in a spreadsheet, just to keep an eye on things. I long ago, consigned the IHD to the drawer, I get better data, instantly, on line, via the pink thing.

Do you now have to upload a photo of your pink thing to be able to use it online?

I only have two buttons, never got a booklet, and never been able to find the off-peak rate or reading, the app shows two readings, both electric, each with a different number, I assume one is import and the other export, since 10th June and 10th July the same on one, not sure what it shows. The other one slowly seems to increase from 1009 to 1065 10 April to 10 July, the credit seems to increase, month by month, and the solar software shows it is all about right.

I should have three readings, Peak, Off-Peak, and Export, I can see them on a bar graph, but not a meter reading number as such.

What pink thing? My meter is not in my main house, to read it need to go outside, down a set of steps, and into the flat under the main house, so rarely look at it. The old meter was easy, and have a separate export meter, never read, but should be able to compare that one to smart meter.

But as said two buttons on smart meter, no instructions, and so many things displayed, I tried to find instructions online, and I get 1754483970612.png well it is not a pre-payment account, so all it says does not apply to me. 1754485001036.jpeg The meter with serial numbers blanked, so just button A and B 1754485161458.png no other buttons. Each time pressed, it scrolls to next reading. But without any instructions, really no idea how to read it. Not really worried as the app tells me what they owe us, but to say easy to read, clearly it is not.

What pink thing?

As I have told you before - It is free, you just ask Octopus to send you one. It plugs into a USB PSU, and connects to your smart meter, and your internet. Once set up, it fires your reading off to Octopus, every 10 seconds, 24/7. You can then log into your account at Octopus, and see your consumption instantly, along with your historical consumption, for the day, week, month, or year, both for E&G.

I am 70 miles from home, and I can see I am using zero gas, and 82watts. A few seconds ago, it was using 220watts, I assume because our upright freezer was running. There are various apps, which allow you to tap into the same data, via an APR, for more in depth analysis.

With the @Harry Bloomfield device, that may be the case, however one is not actually reading the meter, but some device connected to the meter, many years before the Smart Meter Scottish power did a CT coil which went around the main cables from the meter and connected with users internet, so that the bills were closer to what was used. It was then corrected once a year, and to be fair it was not far out.

I had expected the meter to have a few displays, showing many different things, but the list I have shown, shows four totals, Standing charge and Act Tariff price I understand as I know that was the cost of peak-energy, but Rate 02 Act Imp is in kWh but not a clue what it means, I am sure @DiyNutJob is going to tell me, as it seems they are easy to read.

The old Eco 7 did simply alternate between two readings, but seems one has to be smart to read a smart meter? I will have to get a Pink thing, I thought it was the same as the IHD, which is rather useless, it shows Exporting 1.jpg most of the day, what I want is how much am I using now, and how much battery is left, with 40% battery left I can simply put the dishwasher on before going to bed, with 15% left, want to set a timer so switches on after 00:30, so now exporting 1.6 kWh and 99% battery.

That is nearly as I would have expected, I would have thought the neutral would use a Henley block, but seems unlikely to make much difference either way, but now it should work as normal, the meter doing the switching.
I agree completely, the only reason I can come up with is the limited and conjested space between the fuse and meter but it is only a 60A fuse so could have used a bit of 16mm².

Anyway all resolved and thanks to Rodders for pointing out the most obvious.

Glad to hear all now OK, hope every change is not like this, but it was three visits to get my smart meter fitted.
Mine wasn't smooth and a short time after installation provider requested readings as they couldn't access it but not heard from them since.

I read NORMAL reading, I read LOW reading, then I enter on the internet. You seem to think meter reading is rocket science.

I never suggested that. The dumb meters, do just offer those two values, but the smart meters are much more clever than that - they offer much more data.

They can suffer initial delays, until the data begins to flow reliably, besides which, they like to double-check that the data they are receiving, is the correct data, from the correct meter.

The Octopus website, allows you to dig right down in the data, to see just how reliably it gets data updates.

I have found
To read a Landis+Gyr E470 smart meter, locate the display screen and the "A" and "B" buttons. Press the "A" button to wake up the screen (if necessary) and then press it repeatedly to cycle through the readings. Look for the "TOTAL ACT IMPORT" reading, which represents your current electricity consumption. If you have a two-rate tariff, you can access the different rates by pressing and holding button B to view the tariff display and then pressing A to switch between rates.
Then continues
Detailed Steps:
  1. 1. Locate the meter and buttons:
The Landis+Gyr E470 smart meter will have a display screen and two buttons, typically labeled "A" and "B".

    • 2. Wake up the screen (if needed):
If the screen is blank, press button "A" to activate it.

    • 3. Cycle through readings:
Press button "A" repeatedly to navigate through the different display screens.

    • 4. Find "TOTAL ACT IMPORT":
The reading you're looking for is typically labeled "TOTAL ACT IMPORT". This is the total amount of electricity you have consumed since the meter was installed.

    • 5. For two-rate tariffs:
      • Press and hold button "B" to access the tariff display.

    • The first screen will show the first rate's reading.

    • Press button "A" to switch to the second rate's reading.

    • 6. Record the reading:
Write down the numbers displayed in front of "M3" (for gas) or "kWh" (for electricity), ignoring any leading zeros or numbers after the decimal point.
Pressing button A does scroll thought many options, including Meter Act Import_tonemapped.jpgMeter Act Export_tonemapped.jpg however the button B asks if I want to enter code number, and if I want to delete data, but there is no off-peak that I can find, so same as last time I tried, without knowing peak and off-peak, the meter is a bit useless.

The solar panel went in about 3 months before the smart meter, that shows 5215.5 Export and 6030.2 Import seems odd the larger with solar is the Import and larger with smart meter is Export. Possible as solar went in Sept 2023 and smart meter following January, so was a low solar time.

So back to @DiyNutJob you say it is easy, please explain how to work out what is peak and what is off-peak, as I simply can't find it, I will as in wife's name ask her to get the pink thing, but should be able to read from the meter with ease, clearly that is not the case.

Move house to a place without smart meter.
