Hi,

We recently moved into a place that has a Scantronic 9800 installed, we're now about to embark on quite a substantial extension so knowing nothing about alarms I thought it would be good to have a few answers to the following questions:

1) Is this a reasonable system
2) Can new sensors easily be added to this system – I know this will depend on wiring but will it have the capacity?
3) We are maybe going to consider a dog in the future so wondered if it was best to replace all existing and new sensors with pet friendly ones
4) As we know nothing about this alarm and it's installation date is it just better to replace this system with a new improved one under warranty or is this a bit extreme?

Thanks for any advice given.

1) Scantronic 9800 is very old.
2) May be. It had the capacity for 8 devices, so if you only have 5 you have room for 3 more, you get the idea
3) Pet detectors are supposed to be mounted low down. so unless you extend the cable the answer is no. You may also want to read 12 here
4) Best suggestion.

Thanks Breezer, I thought replacement was probably the best idea but I didn't want to throw a decent system away just for the sake of it.

Just out of interest, how do people with young children cope with alarms at night? We'll soon be needing to go up and downstairs into the kitchen at night so does this mean the alarm wont be used at night and only when we're out?

most have a night set button that turns off upstairs. (leaving all downstairs on)

In your case i would suggest you tell the installing company that you want access to the kitchen at night.

Or if the kids are old enough they can turn the alarm off / on when they want to go downstairs at night

1 yes of you keep it serviced

2 yes if the panel has capacity

3 yes, will be no problem at all

4 dont know about extreme but its deffo a waste of money

I've installed around 20 9800s over the years. They are all still in use. Only ever changed one keypad.

9800 like many other panels are robust but scantronic not exactly user friendly,

I would definitely recommend an upgrade if you have the old brown keypad as with new models you could have the option of notification upon alarm via text or voice, set and unset via a fob with future upgrades possible without hassle at a later date to include garden shed etc, and a keypad upstairs for night time setting.

What are you on about, the 98 never had a brown keypad.

I also think the mods are trying to tell you your signature is not permited, as it breaks forum rules

So is it best to keep the system I have but just but a few more modern sensors? Seems a shame to rip the whole thing out.

I have my electrician coming in the next few weeks, are alarms usually their remit or an alarms specialist?

Would happily pay a few hundred quid to update the existing system.

Anyone work in the Bracknell area? I don't mean generally as I know that answer but a expert in alarms???

Hello all

I want to add another sensor to the scantronic 9800 alarm due to an extension - can anyone give me a quick lesson on how to do this and whether any standar PIR will do the job?

All current PIRs run to a central metal panel box in the loft.
