Would a scratch on a plastic pipe need to be a pretty drastic to cause an issue? Imagine any scratches near on on were positioning a fitting aren't ok as would allow the oring to seal

A mate of mine had to replace half a ceiling because of a scratch on a plastic pipe under a fitting.

Correct, you want a nice clean end. A compression fitting could be an option.

As above scratched plastic pipe in push fit fitting is a non starter.
We always water pressure test any first fix.
I think my mates problem is that it was a slow leak that took weeks to start on a new build and once it started it was a slow drip until the damage started to show its self.
