My youngest daughter went wiping old peoples ar5es for the minimum wage rather than go on the dole when she lost her job. Worked seven days a week because they couldn't get enough staff, what's that, no jobs?

There are jobs out there no doubt about it but you have to be willing to work, and then be prepared to accept any job that's available until the job you think you deserve comes along.

I've worked up and down the country just to pay my way, slept in my van sometimes to make it pay because I needed to. The early 90s were no fun. No work, high interest rates people losing their houses. A bricklayer we knew went washing dishes in a restaurant kitchen to get by. It should be like America, dole for a short while, then feck all.

Coljack,

Without the intention of poking my snout into your business, approximately how many actual interviews have you had in your time of unemployment? If you would rather not discuss it further I understand.

Couldn't agree more; some people are just lazy parasites with no shame, pride or dignity who happily sit at home watching jeremy kyle drinking white lightening when they should be at work contributing to society.

They always have well rehearsed excuses to justify themselves, you can almost hear the violins playing in the background!

Just had a quick look there are plenty of jobs advertised for sparkies in the west midlands

Now I cannot comment on other people's situations on here since it is impossible to fully appreciate their circumstances and local job prospects.

My personal experience is that over the last 25 or so years, I have never been out of work for more than 3 months in total. When I have left jobs with nowhere to go, I have done voluntary work, or odd-jobbed for friends and family . Some of this "networking" has led to other longer term work which has self-perpetuated.

Without wishing to insult anyone, I genuinely do not understand the concept of long term unemployment since there is always something to be done and someone willing to pay me to do it, whether it is £50 or £500,or even free labour.

Coljack - Isn't it always the 'expert' that knows what being on the dole long term is like, when they haven't done it, and ignore the comments of people that are?

Walk in my shoes, if you could be me and I could be you for just one hour, if we could find a way to get inside each others mind. If you could see you through my eyes, instead of your ego, I believe you'd be surprised to see, that you'd been blind. Walk a mile in my shoes. And before you abuse, critisise, and accuse, walk a mile in my shoes.

The country is in recession, nearly depression, or double dip recession, more unemployed. There are NO jobs locally for skilled people, For a skilled person to do a manual job doesn't pay the bills, and there are plenty of manually trained people to do that work anyways, like school leavers, why would a manager of a factory employ someone that is higher qualified than himself?

I think people confuse the skilled redundant, with the layabouts that can't be bothered to work, like people confuse illegal immigrants with legal immigrants, and it boils down to fear, change, understanding, and ignorance.

It is extremely funny reading the bizarre and random reasons slagging off the unemployed. Nice. I work for charity, do you fellow posters? I pay tax, so good of you to slag off a situation that you might find yourself in pretty soon. lol

We're in a recession and you're too good for a job  As Tebbit said some years back, "get on your bike and look for work" Crying on here that we don't know what it's like is a load of ****

Ah That Infamous speech that ruined his career! I remember that...that at the same time as Maggie, saying shes not for turning, when all the miners were sacked. Nice assimilation.

The only people crying on here is that that they don't understand unemployment, and all that disagree are IDIOTS, because they comment on something they know nothing about. You didn't read my previous post, you have a mindset. So who is crying ****? YOU when you lose your job, even if you ever had one.

If everyone sat around waiting for someone to give them a job we'd all starve. If you haven't got a job - make one. I did. What are you waiting for? If your benefit was removed and you were destitute you'd soon get off your butt.

"Mickymoody I read your previous whining in fact, most of your posts are you whining about how tough things are for you  You are clearly one clever cookie trouble is, you're a lazy fec ker too. Your excuse that you're too clever than any potential boss is the biggest load 5hite . what an excuse, the wont work always have them.

Blokes like you go into my wife's office (recruitment) all day long telling her they need a job only when they're offered one, it's beneath them or, they don't turn up. As a Chinese friend reminds me. China is supposed to be socialist country yet if you don't work you have to beg to eat, here? well you know the answer to that.

Walk in your shoes, not me, I've too much pride.

Gotta go, I'm off to work ;)

mickymoody you've got no excuse you are just a lazy parasite with no dignity, pride or self respect.

A street cleaner, toilet cleaner or other low paid worker is worth ten million skiv's like you; you seem to think you are better than them; let me tell you that you are not fit to clean their shoes.

Excuses, excuses, excuses.

You really need to take some responsibility for your own life and actions so stop making excuses to explain your lazy, scrounging lifestyle.

Skilled workers can't do manual jobs? Absolute *******S!

If the skill that you have is now of no use to local employers then surely one should consider relocating, retraining or accepting the fact that you will just have to take what is available.

It is true that I don't understand what it is to be long term unemployed, mostly because I have remained adaptable and swallowed any pride in order that my family has remained fed and housed.

I'm so going to get slated by them for saying this..

If someone said to you "you can keep doing your current job at the same wage, or you can do a different job for a lot less and you'll lose your home too" what option would you choose?

seriously, I'd like an answer from Joe and DM at least on this..

as I've said, I'm ashamed to say that I'd rather not take a job that would pay me less than I'm getting at the moment..

on the flip side of that, if they offered me a job scrubbing toilets for more money than I'm on then I'd gladly take it..

one of the jobs I applied for was for an electrician on a sewerage site, and another was working for a company that mainly did jobs in chicken farms, so dirty / demeaning doesn't bother me in the slightest..

as to the question that was asked of me earlier, since last feb I've only reached interview stage 4 times..
I asked one of the interviewers how many had applied and was told that they had had around 60 applications.

You shouldn't be given the option. If you are out of a job for over a year then you have to adjust your life to fit your new social standing. If it means losing your home and relocating into a bedsit at the other end of the country - then so be it. The world doesn't owe you an easy life.

Col you have openly admitted you'd rather sit on the dole than take a paying job. That makes you scum in my book and I can honestly say I'd rather work for less than I could claim in benefits.

I was brought up to have pride and dignity; the world doesn't owe me a roof over my head or food in my belly-I have to earn these things.

People like you col disgust me! If I had my way you be sent to a labour camp to do backbreaking manual work.
