Dear all,
I have just bought a house, with an extension in single brick, what I want to know us the best way to strengthen it/bring it up to current standard.

Knocking it down is not an option for various reasons, what I was thinking was:

Nibbling out some bricks and toothing in some piers THEN
Painting the walls with this luquide membraine type stuff, studding it out, insulating, boarding etc.

Would this be adiquite, if so at what interval should the piers be?

The extension is around 9mx3m

Thanks in advance

Sounds like to me no planning was carried out  Was there planning for this? What is the extension for?

No need for piers.

Construct a timber frame internally and insulate with 100mm celotex.

It was constructed in the 60's, so I have asked my local council if there was any planning permission granted, and was told no but as it is over 40 years old it comes as being 'part of the house' and they can't make me take it down, hense the reason for not wanting to take it down as it would cost me a fair bit to apply for permission and have it built.

It was used as a kitchen and this is what I intend to use it for, but would it take the weight of cupboards, this is why I asked about the piers (but forgot to mention the kitchen0

Thanks

You can rebuild it to its present dimensions under 'general maintenance/repair' and this would not require a planning application. Or even under permitted development.

Also the roof and ceiling will normally brace the wall giving it extra lateral support

I have a 60’s flat roof extension & this summer propped it out, knocked out most of the walls & half the ceiling & rebuilt it to current standards on cavity width/blocks/loft insulation etc + a new set of French doors without any problems from BC; in fact the guy made some helpful comments while inspecting other work going on in the house & had no problem at all adding this work to my completion certificate.
