If I were to Do it meself.... I presume I'd were to prop up maybe brickwork above before dropping the existing lintel down a course- how many acrows would I need to use to prop it?
Depends on how stable the brickwork above is. 1 in the centre with a strongboy would probably do, or 2 spaced out if you are really worried. I have seen people take out that much without any props on just the external skin, but I wouldn't risk it myself.

One strong lad can do a lot of work.
It does depend on how much you are willing to pay. I would happily do a job like that for the right money.
The hardest bit for you will probably be to get it looking good if your bricklaying experience is limited.
