Sink pipe won't screw onto the waste basket??

The nut should be held captive by the lip on the lower part and the seal should sit in the groove. If the nut is coming off, then its either the wrong nut or somethings badly worn. Its probably been bodged in the past and needs to be replaced.
Replacement needed.
