looks like there's differences of opinion!
i've got a reel of 1.5mm earth from a while back, so i'll use that.
thanks for the replies.
 
If the size of your cpc is 1.5mm2 and you are connecting an exposed conductive part to an exposed conductive part (which you are) and the cable is mechanically protected (which it will be), then 1.5mm2 is correct
