Slaithwaite is it pronounced as it is written, or pronounced slowwit - the slow part as in cow?

It's a village near Huddersfield.

I pronounce it as Slayth wait.

There are two suburbs in Liverpool. One spelt Childwall, pronounced as Chilled wall. The other is Gateacre, pronounced Gat-a-ker.
Local TV news always pronounced them as Child-wall and Gate-acre respectively despite many complaints from residents on how to pronounce them.

Plaistow in East London.

Nobs pronounce it Play-stow.

We pronounce it Plar-stow.

Funny that plarstow sounds more nobby.

Blup

The guy on BBC1 doing the canal boating, Robbie Cummings, pronounced it slowit ;) as he arrived there and claimed it was the correct pronunciation.

Towns that people cannot pronounce correctly unless they are "in the know":

Blackley (Manchester, pronounced Blakely)
Oswaldtwistle (Lancashire, pronounced Ozzultwissal)
Sough (Lancashire, pronounced Suff)
Keighley (Yorkshire, pronounced Keithley)

Place names I like to hear Americans say:

Leicestershire
Gloucestershire
Eddinburrow
Glass-go

Got stopped by a car load of Americans in Fallowfield (Manchester). They asked directions to Ev-ez-ham.

After a few seconds, I guessed they meant Evesham, but asked for their hotel address to make sure.

They had just come up the M6 to Manchester, having stopped in Oldbury to ask the way. I think someone was being a ******* that day.

A small but significant minority of people - darn sarf - still pronounce Derby as derr-by, not darby

Blup

Residents should find the sign the news anchor is standing in front of (to prove they went down there to see the double murder-arson-kidnapping for themselves) and put a pronunciation on it..

After all, the motorway sign for Skelmersdale does accurately depict the local pronunciation!

I could never get my head round Belvoir Castle in Leicestershire being pronounced Beaver. WTFo_O
